Amazon just released a new game engine Lumberyard for building games on top of Amazon Web Services. This release furthers Amazons commitment to the gaming industry. Previously they purchased the Twitch game streaming service, which has already been reported to be working on streaming virtual reality.
Lumberyard + GameLift + Twitch = Awesome
Lumberyard is currently in beta testing and does not support virtual reality. From their announcement blog post, Lumberyard + Amazon GameLift + Twitch for Games on AWS:
Support for mobile devices and VR headsets is in the works and should be available within a couple of months.
Competing with Microsoft?
This will continue to keep the game industry staying competitive and may be in response to Microsoft’s push to use Azure as the backend architecture for gaming.
